When people call us about solar, almost nobody asks how many kilowatts will I generate?
. What they really want to know is simpler and far more important: how much will my bill drop, and how long until it pays for itself? We’ll answer that honestly, with real ranges, and we’ll add the part most companies skip over for a foreign owner: the paperwork, and what changes when you’re not a Spanish resident.
1.The honest answer: how much your bill drops
A properly sized solar system reduces a home’s electricity bill by 40% to 70%, depending on your consumption profile. That’s a range, not a magic number, and where you land inside it depends mainly on when you use electricity and whether you add a battery.
We won’t put a bold you’ll save €2,000 a year
here, because it would be a guess until we see your actual bill and your roof. What we will promise is that we work out the numbers with you, with your real consumption in front of us. Anyone giving you a fixed percentage over the phone, without seeing your house, is selling you a fantasy.
2.Why a coastal villa saves more
Here’s an advantage a flat inland doesn’t have: the sun and the type of consumption. The Costa Blanca and the Murcia coast enjoy some of the best sunshine hours in Europe, so every panel produces more than it would in most of Spain.
And your consumption works in your favour:
- Air conditioning in summer, exactly when the sun produces most. The heat peak matches the generation peak, so the A/C draws from your panels, not from the grid.
- A pool with its filtration pump, running during the day.
- A heat pump for hot water or climate control.
All of that is daytime consumption, and daytime consumption is precisely what the panels cover for free. The more of your usage happens while the sun is up, the closer you get to that 70%.
3.The thing that matters most: when you use power
This is the detail almost nobody explains, and it decides your savings more than anything else. Two neighbours with identical systems can save very different amounts: the one at home during the day, running the washing machine, the A/C and the pool at midday, uses nearly all their production; the one who’s out all day and switches everything on at night does not.
And there’s a very common case here on the coast: the owner who used to come over for just a few weeks a year and now spends far more time at the property. If that’s you, your daytime consumption shoots up, and that’s where panels (and a battery) go from nice idea
to obvious decision

4.What about the power I produce but don’t use?
Good question. Whatever you generate and don’t consume at the time isn’t lost: it’s fed into the grid and your supplier compensates you as a discount on your bill (the surplus-compensation scheme, in force since 2019). One caveat: you’re usually paid less for that surplus than it costs you to buy energy, so the goal isn’t to produce in order to sell, but to consume as much of your own energy as possible. That’s why an oversized just in case
system doesn’t always pay off: what’s profitable is a system tailored to how you actually live.
5.Batteries: worth it in your case?
It depends, and we’ll tell you straight. A battery stores the energy you don’t use during the day so you can use it at night, when you switch on the lights, the TV or the A/C to sleep. That significantly raises your self-consumption and, as a bonus, gives you backup if the power goes out (something that’s genuinely appreciated in some urbanisations).
Who is it for? Mainly people who are home in the evenings, those who want to depend as little as possible on the grid, and anyone here for much of the year. Who might it not suit yet? Someone who barely uses the house or consumes almost everything during the day. 6.How long until it pays for itself?
The usual payback for a well-built residential system is 6 to 10 years, depending on size, your consumption and any grants you secure. After that, you have many years of near-free electricity ahead, because the panels keep producing for more than 25 years.
And here’s an extra many people forget: a home with solar increases in value. When a coastal villa goes on the market with panels and a battery already installed, it has an edge over the one next door. It’s not just a monthly saving; it’s an asset.
7.Grants, tax breaks and the paperwork (the non-resident bit)
There are three ways to bring the investment down, but they change depending on where and when you live here, so honesty first: your specific case has to be checked, not assumed from what applied last year.
- Regional grants for self-consumption run in funding rounds and do run out; it’s worth checking what’s open at the time.
- IBI and ICIO rebates (local property and building taxes): many town halls rebate part of them for a few years, but it depends on your municipality’s bylaw. It isn’t the same everywhere.
- Personal income tax (IRPF) deduction for energy-efficiency improvements, subject to requirements.
Now, the honest truth for a foreign owner: none of this should be your headache. You don’t need to be a Spanish resident to install solar or to benefit, but the admin is where most people get stuck, so we take it off your plate.
