Adding a solar battery in Pinar de Campoverde | Cúprico

If you already have solar panels on your villa here and you’ve noticed you’re spending more and more of the year at the property, this one’s for you: it’s exactly what happened to one of our clients in Pinar de Campoverde, and it’s why we added extra panels and a battery to their existing system. We’re sharing the case (anonymised, as always) because we’re seeing this pattern more and more along the coast, and it might be yours too.

1.From a holiday home to a home lived in most of the year

The owners, a foreign couple with a villa in solar panel installers in Pinar de Campoverde, had solar panels installed a few years ago with summer mainly in mind: that was when they visited most, when the air-conditioning bill was highest, and when self-consumption made the most obvious sense. Like a lot of second homes in the area, the system was sized around that pattern of use.

Over time, how they lived at the property changed: a few extra weeks each year, then months, until eventually they were spending most of the year there. And that’s where a system designed for a few summer weeks started to fall short.

2.Why panels that used to work well suddenly weren’t enough

With far more time at the property, consumption changed significantly: more hours at home, more appliances running, and above all, usage in hours when the house used to sit empty, including the evening and night. The issue wasn’t that the panels produced less; it’s that most of that daytime production was being fed back to the grid (under the existing surplus-compensation scheme) while, at night, the electricity they used had to be bought back from the utility at the normal rate.

It’s a very common pattern in the Vega Baja and the golf-resort areas: the owner who ends up staying put finds their bill doesn’t drop as much as expected, even with panels installed for years. If that sounds like you, it doesn’t mean the original system was done badly — it means how you use the house has changed.

3.What we installed: more panels and a battery on top of what was already there

We weren’t starting from scratch: there was already a working solar system, so this was an expansion, not a new installation. In this particular case we added sixteen more panels to raise total output, plus a battery to store the day’s surplus so it could be used at night, instead of selling it back to the grid for less than it costs to buy it back later.

We also checked the consumer unit and the grid connection point, because increasing the system’s capacity and adding a new element like a battery both require confirming that the whole set-up — panels, inverter, battery and protection devices — is consistent and still meets current regulations. It’s not just a matter of plugging in the new equipment.

4.The paperwork: expanding a system that’s already up and running, as a non-resident

This is the part that raises the most questions, especially for a foreign owner who has no reason to know Spanish administrative procedures. Expanding an existing system with more panels and a battery isn’t as simple as adding an appliance: it typically means updating the installation’s technical documentation, issuing a new electrical certificate (the Spanish boletín or CIE) reflecting the final set-up, and, depending on the case, amending the self-consumption registration so it matches the real capacity and storage installed.

We won’t give you a fixed, step-by-step timeline here, because it depends on the town hall, the grid operator and the final capacity of the system, and your specific case needs checking before assuming anything. What we can tell you is that we handle all of that on the client’s behalf: they didn’t have to chase paperwork or make sense of Spanish forms, which for a non-resident owner is usually the most tiring part of the whole process — and being far away for part of the year doesn’t get in the way of any of it.

5.The result: more self-consumption, and backup if the power goes out

With the battery, the energy that used to be exported to the grid during the day is now stored for use at night, so the share of the bill covered by self-consumption rose noticeably compared with before (we won’t put a fixed figure here: it depends on how much you use at night and how the battery is configured). There’s a second benefit this client valued just as much as the savings: the battery gives them backup if the power goes out, something that’s appreciated a lot more in practice than it sounds on paper in some of the local urbanisations.

As always: we won’t promise a fixed savings percentage without seeing the real consumption at your property. What does hold true in cases like this one is that the more time you spend at the property, and especially the more you use in the evening and at night, the more a battery tends to make sense on top of a system you already have.

7.Frequently asked questions

Can a battery be added to solar panels I already have? Yes, it’s one of the jobs we get asked for most. We check your inverter and consumer unit to see which battery fits, and update the installation’s paperwork, but there’s no need to start from zero.

If I add a battery, do I also need more panels, or can I add just the battery? It depends on your case. Some clients only need a battery added to what they already produce; others, like the owners in this case, also benefit from expanding production because their consumption has gone up too. We work it out with your real consumption in front of us.

How long does legalising an expansion like this take? It varies by town hall, grid operator and final capacity, so we won’t give a fixed timeframe here — we’ll confirm it once we’ve seen your system and your specific case.

I’m a non-resident and don’t live here all year — can I still do this expansion? Yes, you don’t need to be a Spanish resident. We handle the paperwork and keep you updated at every step, even while you’re out of the country.
